Editor’s note: A version of this story appeared in CNN’s Wonder Theory science newsletter. Analysis of ancient DNA recovered from human remains has illuminated the traits and ancestry of historic individuals — be it a mummified iceman, Chinese emperor or legendary composer. The origins of the empire and its people remained obscure until a landmark April 2022 study found they hailed from the Mongolian steppe. CNN —Close flybys of Io, one of Jupiter’s moons and the most volcanically active world in our solar system, have revealed a lava lake and a towering feature called “Steeple Mountain” on the moon’s alien surface. “We also got some great close-ups and other data on a 200-kilometer-long (127-mile-long) lava lake called Loki Patera. Juno detected the mountain with the help of the sun shining on Io’s surface, which created dramatic shadows that revealed a very sharp peak. NASA/JPL-Caltech/SwRI/MSSSAs an outdoors enthusiast, Bolton joked that Io’s Steeple Mountain should be one of the solar system’s skiing and snowboarding destinations. Jonathan Majors is out at Marvel after his misdemeanor assault and harassment conviction Monday, a person familiar with the matter told CNBC. The Marvel franchise is in a state of flux right now, with audience goodwill dwindling with each new entrant. Following the incident, but prior to his conviction, Majors was dropped from several marketing campaigns as well as by his talent agency. Disney previously pulled his film "Magazine Dreams," once considered an Oscar contender, was also pulled from the calendar. With Majors' conviction, Disney now has to make a choice: recast the role of Kang or completely alter its plans for the MCU.

NEW YORK (AP) — The actor Jonathan Majors appeared in court in New York on Wednesday for the expected start of jury selection in a trial in which he is accused of injuring his then-girlfriend during an argument last spring. The 34-year-old actor entered a Manhattan courtroom alongside his current girlfriend, the actress Meagan Good, carrying a Bible and one of his signature coffee cups. Majors was arrested in March over a confrontation between the actor and Grace Jabbari, his girlfriend at the time, during a car ride in Manhattan. After the couple's driver stopped the car and the pair got out, Jabbari said Majors threw her back into the vehicle. Majors’ attorneys have maintained that Jabbari was the aggressor during the fight and had scratched and hit him.

CEO Bob Iger suggested as early as March that the company should decrease the number of sequel films Marvel releases in favor of bringing newer characters and stories into the mix. Box office analysts aren't ready to wave the white flag on the MCU, which has left rival DC, owned by Warner Bros. The promise was that the events of the shows would come full circle and influence the content of Marvel's films. CNN —Disney has a mess on its hands to marvel at. The embarrassingly weak debut marked the worst opening for any Marvel Studios film in its history. But, in recent years, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has started to show serious signs of trouble. Those films — all of which were released after “Endgame” — are the four worst-reviewed films in Marvel history, according to Rotten Tomatoes averages. And the movies failed to earn an A-rating from CinemaScore, a feat almost all Marvel films easily accomplished, signaling deeper troubles with audience reception and crushing word-of-mouth.

Initial predictions saw the film opening at between $75 million and $80 million domestically, but those figures shrunk to a range between $60 million and $65 million ahead of Friday's opening. The latest entrant in the Marvel Cinematic Universe hauled in an estimated $47 million domestically over its debut weekend, the lowest in franchise history. Internationally, "The Marvels" garnered $63.3 million in ticket sales, bringing its global haul to $110.3 million. Still, Disney had an uphill battle drawing moviegoers to theaters for its 33rd MCU film. That is perhaps why "The Marvels" landed the second-lowest opening day for a MCU film, securing just $21.5 million on Friday.

The launch event for the second season of the Disney+ series ‘Loki,’ at El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood. That will likely make life a little harder for those trying to break into the Mouse House. The entertainment giant’s fiscal fourth-quarter results late Wednesday generally came in ahead of Wall Street’s expectations, especially in key areas such as streaming subscribers, theme park revenue and operating income. All soundly beat Wall Street’s targets—especially the 6.9 million net new subscribers added to the core Disney+ service during the September quarter, which was more than double the number analysts expected. Disney’s shares rose more than 3% in after-hours trading following the results.

Paleontologists recently described the previously unknown mosasaur from fossils found near the North Dakota town of Walhalla. The town’s name comes from Valhalla, the feasting hall of Norse mythology where dead heroes gather, so the scientists dubbed the mosasaur Jormungandr walhallaensis. When the scientists examined the skull, they quickly realized they had something unusual on their hands. This combination of traits convinced the researchers that what they were looking at was a new genus and species. Here is a line drawing of the skull of the Jormungandr walhallaensis.

Marvel Cinematic Universe actor Jonathan Majors will stand trial on assault charges next month after a New York judge Wednesday denied his motion to dismiss the case. Following the alleged assault, Jabbari, a choreographer, was taken to the hospital for "minor injuries to her head and neck," police said at the time. Majors has denied the claims against him and brought a misdemeanor assault counter-charge against Jabbari, alleging that she attacked him. Jabbari has since been granted a temporary order of protection against Majors, according to Variety. Additionally, Majors' defense team has filed another motion to shield certain sensitive evidence from the public to ensure Majors' right to a fair trial.

The Marvel series for Disney+ vary in their degree of independence from the mega-narrative that threads through Marvel’s feature films. An attempt to link Fury’s experience of racism and exclusion with the plight of the homeless, persecuted Skrulls doesn’t add anything worth noting, at least in the early going. Amid the franchise tending that’s going on in “Secret Invasion,” one decision feels like a potential misstep: emphasizing Fury’s weariness and malaise. When he does get a chance to be fierce, the writing — “I’m Nick Fury. Even when I’m out, I’m in” — doesn’t hold much promise of future satisfaction.

And, for once, the success of a Marvel film could bode well for the future of its longtime adversary. On the theatrical side, DC Studios has announced five new projects that will roll out starting in 2025 with Gunn's own "Superman: Legacy." After a fourth Thor movie and a third standalone Ant-Man film, even Disney CEO Bob Iger wants something new out Marvel. "Sequels typically worked well for us," Iger said during the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom Conference on Thursday. "There's nothing in any way inherently off in terms of the Marvel brand," Iger said. Additionally, the amount of time between Disney+ Marvel series has grown. A new Marvel series has not debuted since the final episodes of "She-Hulk" launched in early October.
